Apple, Google and Microsoft to Extend Support for Alliance’s Passwordless Login Standard FIDO and the World Wide Web Consortium. The companies plan to strengthen the role of biometric user authentication methods.

According to FIDO, current authentication methods are vulnerable. The alliance noted that many users reuse the same password to log in to different services.

“This can lead to account theft, data leakage, and even theft of personal information,” FIDO said in a statement.

Passwordless login allows users to:

  • automatically access FIDO login credentials on their devices, even new ones, without having to re-register each account;
  • Use FIDO authentication on a mobile device to authorize an app or website on a neighboring device regardless of browser and operating system.

“Users will sign in by performing the same action they take to unlock their gadgets, such as fingerprint verification, facial recognition, or entering a PIN,” the press release says.

The alliance added that this method can prevent successful phishing attacks that steal passwords.

Apple, Google, and Microsoft plan to have password-free logins on their platforms in 2023.

Previously, FIDO representatives reported that at least 25% of users use biometric authentication methods in online services.

Recall that in June 2021, Apple introduced the Passkeys technology for registering on various sites without using a password.
