On June 8, 2022, the Ethereum development team will migrate the Ropsten testnet to the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus algorithm. The code for the relevant request has already been published in the GitHub repository.
The “merge” test will take place in two phases. On May 30, developers will roll out the blockchain consensus layer. Then, it will be combined with the Ropsten testnet and the latter will be imported into the PoS algorithm.
Ropsten is one of the Ethereum testnets created by a development team in 2017. It is considered the best mainnet replication as it has a similar structure.
In April, Ethereum developer Tim Beiko said that the second-largest cryptocurrency network by capitalization will transition to PoS “a few months from the previously mentioned June.”
The combination of Ropsten with the PoS consensus layer is in line with this plan. Earlier in the week, the project team also consolidated reward programs for mainnet and Proof-of-Stake consensus level. The maximum reward has been increased to $250,000.
Recall that in May, Ethereum developers performed a shadow fork on the mainnet to stress-test the process of consolidating blockchains as part of the transition to the PoS algorithm.
