Stripe, a provider of financial infrastructure for online business, will continue to support payments in the first cryptocurrency as part of a partnership with Bitcoin processing OpenNode.
Stripe users will be able to convert incoming payments and any amount of their balance to BTC. The service will be part of the public beta of the company’s new app store, which is scheduled to launch soon.
OpenNode supports bitcoin payments both on-chain and over the Lightning Network. In February, the Los Angeles-based project team closed its $20 million Series A funding round at a valuation of $220 million.
At the beginning of 2018, Stripe abandoned bitcoin due to strong price fluctuations and prolonged confirmation of transactions. Later, company president John Collison did not rule out the return of digital gold support in the future.
In October 2021, Stripe announced that it was recruiting developers and designers for its cryptocurrency division “to create the future of Web3 payments.”
Collison has previously described himself and the company as “enthusiastic bitcoin fans” and expressed interest in a number of innovative projects such as the Solana blockchain and the Lightning Network.
Recall that in April 2022, Stripe added support for payments in the USDC stablecoin on the Polygon blockchain.
