The investigation into the criminal case of the hacker group REvil, whose members were allegedly detained by the FSB of the Russian Federation, stalled due to the lack of sufficient information about the victims and the damage done. Kommersant writes about it.
According to the publication, lawyers for one of the defendants appealed to Security Council vice-chairman Oleg Khramov, who previously stated that the American side unilaterally withdrew from the negotiation process following the arrest of REvil members.
Lawyers noted that Interior Ministry investigators were only able to charge eight suspects with illegally obtaining, storing and using electronic funds for illegal money transfer purposes.
According to the conclusion of the United Credit Card Company experts as a result of the investigation, two US citizens were victims of hackers. The defense pointed out that the investigation had no data on either the victims or the harm done to them.
Lawyers noted that the investigation was actually stopped due to lack of information. One of the defendants in the case, Dmitry Korotaev, was never questioned the entire time he was held in the pre-trial detention centre.
According to lawyer Igor Vagin, the transfer of a criminal case to court without victims and damage is clearly not promising.
Recall that experts consider REvil, also known as Sodinokibi, one of the largest hacker groups in the world. It was involved in several large-scale attacks – the attackers distributed ransomware and demanded a ransom in cryptocurrency.
In January, the FSB announced the “liquidation” of the REvil group and the arrest of its alleged members, based on an appeal from US authorities.
