Jesse Powell, CEO of Kraken cryptocurrency exchange, presented a document on the company’s corporate culture and invited all employees who disagreed with its content to resign.
The document defines the company’s “liberal philosophical values”, including tolerance for “diverse opinions,” and affirms the right of law-abiding citizens to take up arms. At the same time, Powell announced the Jet Ski Program, which offered opposition workers four months’ pay leave.
According to the New York Times, during discussions on corporate news outlet Slack, Powell allegedly objected to employees’ use of preferred pronouns, discussed the admissibility of racial slurs, and talked about “brainwashing” American women.
In the same conversation, Kraken CEO Christina Yi wrote that “CEO, company and corporate culture will not change significantly.”
“If someone doesn’t like working here or thinks they’re hated here, work somewhere you don’t disgust them,” he added.
Employees must decide before June 20 whether they will continue to work with the exchange.
Jesse Powell wrote on Twitter that 20 people categorically oppose the program, but that their departure would not affect the company’s performance in any way.
“Diversity isn’t always easy. It’s funny how the biggest anti-discrimination campaigners don’t realize how much they discriminate against others. Do you want to be “inclusive” when asking a candidate for an English teacher position in Saudi Arabia their pronoun or gender in an interview?” asked the Kraken CEO.
He added that the majority of the exchange’s employees “just want to work” without “participating in discussions and therapy sessions”, so the company will continue to improve its pre-filtering of applicants during hiring.
Kraken currently employs more than 3,000 people. According to The Block Research, in May 2022 the exchange was the fourth largest exchange by trading volume.
Recall that in April Kraken confirmed its plans to enter the stock market in 2022.
