A court has ordered the surrender of former Monero chief developer Ricardo “Fluffypony” Spagni to the US Police Service on July 5 to be extradited to South Africa.

In July 2021, law enforcement detained Spagni at the Nashville airport (USA) at the request of South African authorities, who accused him of fraudulent $ 100,000. The case is not about Monero, but about his work in South Africa. Cape Cookies company in 2009-2011.

Spagni faces up to 20 years in prison on the charges. Duncan Oakes, the attorney representing the developer, called the arrest “unreasonable”. According to him, Spagni mistakenly believed that the presence of his representative in the Cape Cookies case was sufficient.

Recall that in September 2021, a US court released Fluffypony from arrest.

Spagni withdrew from active participation in the development of Monero in 2019, but is still considered its unofficial face. The developer, although not directly its creator, stood at the origin of the project.
