Hackers were able to attack the Ronin sidechain thanks to spyware in a PDF document that one of the employees had downloaded from a job offer letter from a non-existent company. The Block writes about this by citing knowledgeable sources.

According to them, offers from a fake company were sent via LinkedIn to the employees of Sky Mavis, which developed the blockchain game Axie Infinity.

One of the engineers answered the blank. After a series of interviews, he was sent a letter containing a “offer” in the form of a PDF document. The latter contained malware that had infiltrated the Ronin network.

Later, the hackers managed to take control of 4 out of 9 authenticators. They gained access to the fifth through the Axie DAO.

Recall that the Ronin sidechain featured in Axie Infinity was hacked back in March. The attackers withdrew nearly $625 million worth of crypto assets, making the hack the largest in the history of the DeFi segment.

Later, the project team reported that hackers used social engineering to gain unauthorized access to assets.

In June, the developers relaunched the Ronin sidechain and refunded users the funds they lost in the March hack.
