China has used artificial intelligence to “improve” the judiciary by proposing decisions, drafting documents and warning of “alleged human error” in decisions. The Daily Mail writes about it.

according to the decree People’s Republic of China GNAjudges should consult artificial intelligence in every case. If they disagree with the machine’s recommendation, they must provide a written justification.

AI has also been linked to police databases and China’s social credit system, allowing it to automatically impose penalties for crimes.

According to officials, the technology has made a “significant contribution to the legal development of civilization”. Critics of the system believe it risks creating a world in which man is ruled by a machine.

Zhang Linghan, a law professor at the China University of Political Science and Law, warned of the rapidly increasing risks associated with AI.

“People will gradually lose their free will as their dependence on technology increases,” said Zhang.

He added that humanity must be prepared for “judicial erosion” by technology companies.

China has been developing an intelligent court system since 2016, when Qiang Zhou, head of the Supreme People’s Court of China, called for the use of technology to improve the “fairness, efficiency and reliability” of the legal system.

This meant the introduction of robotic lawyers in courtrooms, automatic transcription systems with voice recognition, and “virtual meetings” for remote trials.

PRC authorities have also established a highly specialized “Internet court” that deals with online crimes. This has led to the creation of huge databases where information about all cases is loaded – almost 100,000 per day.

Artificial intelligence has also been connected to the “Internet court” to extract information from past decisions so that the system can find precedent and propose new ones.

Recall that in July, Chinese researchers talked about an algorithm that “reads the minds” of Communist Party members and determines their allegiance.

In June, Chinese authorities used coronavirus monitoring apps to quell protests from deceived guardians.
