Cryptocurrency exchange Kraken has closed its headquarters in San Francisco amid a tense crime situation. Screenshot of the company’s president, Jess Powell’s remarks, was broadcast by political observer Richie Greenberg.
Powell retweeted the journalist’s post but left it without comment. According to the statement, we are talking about an office at 548 Market Street in the central part of the city.
“We have closed Kraken’s global headquarters […] after many employees were assaulted, harassed and robbed on their commute”.
The head of the exchange also criticized the District Attorney’s program. Powell’s dissatisfaction was shared by Twitter users.
“I worked on Market Street for a few months, it’s crazy, it turns into a slum after 6pm. I’m from Europe and I’ve never seen anything like it. I still have memories of what I saw. I was just trying not to turn around and get stabbed,” one user said.
Respondents to the R/CryptoCurrency sub-loan cited high home prices as reasons for the crime spike—average rent is about $3,000. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, there are more than 18,000 homeless people in the city.
Recall that in May 2021, the Bitcoin exchange Coinbase announced the closure of its headquarters in San Francisco. However, the company announced this step with a desire to become a company that operates predominantly in a remote format.
