Online broker Robinhood has expanded access to its cryptocurrency wallet beta testing and announced plans for Lightning Network integration “in the coming months.”
Each of the nearly 2 million users on the waitlist will be able to test the wallet’s functionality. All cryptocurrencies offered on the platform are open to transactions.
The service will not be available to residents of the states of New York, Nevada, and Hawaii.
Robinhood CTO Aparna Chennapragada explained the possibilities of a crypto wallet in a blog post:
- QR codes for sending digital assets;
- advanced security and fraud protection mechanisms, including mandatory 2FA and address verification;
- view the cost of the cryptocurrency in dollars before sending;
- the ability to track the status of the translation.
Network fees will be charged in addition to the online broker fee.
Chennapragada promised to reveal more details as the functionality expands.
Robinhood announced beta testing of the wallet in September 2021 and that it will be available to all users in 2022.
By the end of October, more than 1 million users applied to the waiting list. In December, the online broker partnered with Chainalysis for regulatory compliance. In January, thousands of selected customers began beta testing the wallet.
Earlier, the CEO of the company, Vlad Tenev, described cryptocurrencies as the basis for future development of Robinhood.
In March, the online broker announced the replacement of debit cards with new Cash Cards with the possibility of getting cashback on digital assets.
