We brought together the most important news of the week from the world of cyber security.

  • Uzbek authorities have unblocked a number of social networks.
  • Experts reported a phishing campaign targeting MetaMask wallet users.
  • Taiwan has faced a wave of cyber attacks since Nancy Pelosi’s visit.

Unblocked some social networks in Uzbekistan

The Information and Mass Communication Agency of the Presidential Administration of Uzbekistan announced that Twitter, WeChat and Vkontakte were unblocked in the country. The ministry said the “lockdowns are hurting development”.

Recall that the country limited the operation of a number of social networks in 2021 for violations of the law on personal data.

Experts warn of a phishing attack against MetaMask users

Halborn cybersecurity experts have detected a phishing campaign targeting MetaMask wallet users.

Attackers send emails that look like the MetaMask command. In them, users are asked to verify wallets – for this you need to follow the link and enter your secret phrase. Halborn noted the main signs of fraud:

  • sender’s name and e-mail address contain an error: Metamaks instead of MetaMask;
  • fake domain metamax.auction;
  • lack of personalization – the letter does not specify the username or other account-specific information.

Experts recommended that you always check the URL before clicking the link, install 2FA and update it regularly.

Taiwan targeted by cyberattacks after Nancy Pelosi’s visit

Reuters writes that many companies and structures in Taiwan were exposed to cyber attacks immediately after the visit of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.

Victims include government websites, rail infrastructure, and the massive 7-Eleven chain of stores. The attacks did not cause significant damage to their business.

Accenture noted that it “seemed more like a theatrical performance than a threat.” The company stressed that stronger cyberattacks have been recorded before, forcing many financial institutions in Taiwan to suspend operations.

Hackers gain access to 140,000 Wiseasy payment terminals

Unidentified people gained access to dashboards used to remotely manage and control thousands of Wiseasy credit card payment terminals. TechCrunch writes about it.

Wiseasy manufactures Android-based terminals used in restaurants, hotels, retail outlets and schools in the Asia-Pacific region. The company can manage, configure and update them remotely via the cloud service.

Buguard discovered the passwords of Wiseasy employees, including the administrator account, on the Dark Web. Buguard said hackers have compromised two cloud-based control panels, none of which are protected by two-factor authentication. As a result, the attackers gained access to around 140,000 Wiseasy payment terminals worldwide.

Australian man accused of creating spyware purchased more than 14,000 times

Australian authorities have accused a resident of a country of creating and distributing spyware.

According to law enforcement, the accused created the Trojan horse when he was 15 years old. He developed a software called Imminent Monitor and sold it to more than 14,500 people in 128 countries. With its help, it was possible to gain full access to the victim’s computer, steal data and remotely monitor the victims using a webcam and microphone.

Defendant allegedly distributed spyware from 2013, when it was neutralized, to 2019.
