China’s tech giants have shared details of their algorithms with the country’s regulators. He writes about CNBC.
The China Cyberspace Administration (CAC) has released a list of 30 algorithms from companies including tech giants such as Alibaba and Tencent, along with brief explanations of their purpose.
According to the document, ByteDance’s algorithm created for the Chinese version of TikTok is used to suggest potentially interesting videos, products and services to users. To do this, the system analyzes behavioral data such as clicks and likes.
Taobao marketplace system is used to recommend content on the homepage and other parts of the app based on the user’s past search data.
It is unclear from the published information how deeply CAC has penetrated into the details of the tech giants’ algorithms. Firms on the list did not comment on the regulator’s release.
Recall that in August 2021, China introduced the rules for the use of algorithms proposed by technology companies.
In January 2022, the Chinese authorities approved the procedure for regulating recommendation systems. They went into effect on 1 March.
In April, the CAC announced a review of the tech giants for compliance with the new rules.
