Meta used an artificial intelligence algorithm to fire dozens of moderators hired through contract firm Accenture. Business Insider writes about it.
According to the report, the contractor told about 60 employees that Facebook jobs would “soon be taken away.” The reasons for the cuts were not disclosed and the employees were not informed about the changes.
According to the publication, employees were briefed about the layoffs during a hastily scheduled video call. During the call, unnamed Accenture representatives told contractors that they were selected “at random” using an algorithm.
Dismissed workers were told they could reapply and be interviewed for new positions at the firm.
Facebook declined to comment on the situation, and an Accenture spokesperson declined to “take the job”.
The cuts come in the midst of an unprecedented challenge for the Meta. Earlier, Director of Product Chris Cox warned employees of “future financial challenges” related to privacy policy changes and macroeconomic pressures.
The company also reported a decline in revenue for the first quarter of 2022 for the first time in its history. In particular, the Meta division, which focuses on metadata, lost $2.8 billion.
According to some reports, the company’s employees are concerned about the possibility of a 10% reduction in its workforce, although representatives of the tech giant reject such plans.
