Members of the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee sent a request to four mining companies for data on the environmental impact of their operations.

These are Core Scientific, Riot Blockchain, Marathon Digital and Stronghold Digital. All listed firms have public status.

“Blockchain technology holds tremendous promise that can make our personal information safer and the economy more efficient. However, the power consumption and software required to support cryptocurrencies, [Proof-of-Work]In some cases, it can create serious externalities in the form of harmful emissions and excessive waste.”

They asked the miners to report how each of them reduced the negative impact on the environment. Companies should also indicate the steps they have taken to reduce the impact on the power system.

In December 2021, US Senator Elizabeth Warren asked mining company Greenidge Generation to provide detailed operating data. According to him, electricity consumption in bitcoin mining is “comparable to Denmark, Chile, Argentina and Washington state”.

The firm has faced negative environmental impact charges before. In 2022, the New York Supreme Court dismissed environmentalists’ claims against Greenidge.

Recall that in April 2022, the lower house of the New York State Legislature supported a moratorium on mining using electricity produced from carbon sources. The bill later received support from the local Senate.

Vitalik Buterin, general partner of Castle Island Ventures Nick Carter, and other community members criticized the document.
