Major German hosting provider Hetzner said that using its servers to run cryptocurrency mining software violates company policies. Twitter users drew attention to the comment in the r/hetzner subreddit.
“Our products are not allowed to be used for any mining-related application, even remotely. Including Ethereum. […] Even if you only run one node, we will consider it a violation of our rules,” the official representative of the cloud provider says in a message.
According to Ethernodes, Hetzner accounts for 16% of Ethereum nodes at the time of writing. Leading Amazon Web Services.
Data: Ethernodes.
One Reddit user asked, “Given that 16% of Ethereum PoW nodes are running on your platform but have moved to PoS, can you explain to your customers why you really don’t allow this?” she asked.
Another commentator added that such a stance was “about to be a PR disaster for Hetzner.”
“It’s clear why you banned mining, but it’s inexplicable why you banned nodes.”
The Hetzner spokesperson’s statement drew criticism from the community. “Such a provider does not inspire confidence,” said the developer, under the pseudonym Banteg.
in any case, this type of provider does not give confidence for any mission critical
Previously, Messari analysts noticed that Amazon Web Services, Hetzner and OVH accounted for 69% of Ethereum nodes, out of 65% hosted in data centers. For Solana, 72% of 95% of nodes are hosted by the same infrastructure players.
Recall that in May 2021, Hetzner banned mining on its servers after users started mining the Chia cryptocurrency with their help.
