The Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation supported the proposal to legalize the production of cryptocurrencies, the department also works with the Ministry of Finance on the taxation of mining. This was announced by Anton Gorelkin, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Information Policy Committee.
Referring to a letter from the ministry, Gorelkin said the Department of Energy believes miners should consume electricity at a tariff for “other” consumers, not the population.
The Ministry drew attention to the risks of interruption of “high-quality and uninterrupted power supply during mass mining in the residential sectors”, as this activity significantly increases the load on the power grid.
“The Ministry believes that these negative effects can be offset if mining is defined as a type of commercial activity and an appropriate taxation model is established,” said Gorelkin.
Earlier, the Department of Energy had stated that allocating sites for mining would be more appropriate at the regional rather than the federal level.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Construction of the Russian Federation proposed creating an experimental legal regime for the production of cryptocurrencies.
