In total, Hurun counted 1,312 non-public companies valued at over $1 billion in 48 countries. Their total value is $4.2 trillion, making up 17.6% of the top 10 totals.

“In the first six months of the year, 369 new unicorns were detected, two a day. Almost a third are engaged in fintech, SaaS, and blockchain. 80% provide services and only 20% have physical products. “It sells to businesses 65% and consumers 35%,” said Rupert Hugewerf, Hurun Principal Investigator.

The USA is the leader in the ranking with 625 companies. Their numbers have increased by 138 in the last six months. China follows with 312 unicorns (+11).

India retained the third place with 68 places on the list. Outside the country, Indian founders created another 56 “unicorns”.

Among the cities, the title “Unicorn Capital of the World” was retained by San Francisco – 176 companies. New York beat Beijing in the rankings – 120 against 90 attempts.

The top 10 “new faces” in the ranking since the beginning of the year were two representatives of the blockchain industry: the operator of the Upbit exchange Dunamu ($ 8 billion) and the platform KuCoin ($ 6.3 billion).

Recall that Forbes placed Changpeng Zhao, the founder and CEO of Binance, in the first place in the ranking of billionaires in the cryptocurrency industry in March. The publication brought him a fortune of $ 19 billion.

In November 2021, Chinese Caijing journalists estimated Zhao’s fortune at $ 90 billion, while in January Bloomberg announced a similar figure – $ 96 billion.
