Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has filed a motion with the Texas federal court to dismiss an $8 million fraud case, Law360 reports.
State resident Divya Gadasalli accused the company of “aiding and abetting” romantic scams. According to the complaint, the woman met the attacker on Tinder in May 2021, who allegedly pretended to be a successful investor and convinced her to invest in cryptocurrencies.
Gadasalli accused the man of conspiracy, fraud and misrepresentation, and Binance of “aiding and promoting conversion”. The defendants included crypto exchange Poloniex, TD Bank, and federal savings bank Abacus Bank. The total amount of compensation is 8 million dollars.
Binance representatives said Gadasally could not disclose how the exchange knew about the allegedly stolen funds. The company stated that it does not do business in the United States and, as a foreign person, is not subject to the jurisdiction of the country’s federal judicial system.
Recall that in 2021, users of online dating services gave scammers $ 139 million in cryptocurrencies.
