CEO Changpeng Zhao said that Bitcoin exchange Binance has returned approximately $5.8 million of Axie Infinity assets stolen by hackers.

On March 23, unidentified individuals hacked the Ronin Ethereum sidechain and pulled approximately $625 million in ETH and USDC. The incident came to light six days later, and experts noted that some of the funds were sent to centralized exchanges.

Zhao said that at Binance, hackers distributed assets to 86 accounts.

“$5.8 million was returned. We’ve done this many times before for other projects,” he said.

The head of Binance confirmed that a hacker group from North Korea was behind the attack.

In April, US authorities linked the Ethereum address with the stolen funds to the Lazarus group, which allegedly operates in the interests of the DPRK.

Recall that this hackers association was involved in the $280 million KuCoin hack in 2021. Total damage to crypto projects from attacks by North Korean hackers reached $400 million during the year.
