Performing arts association Equity has launched the “Stop the AI Stealing the Show” campaign in the UK. It aims to reduce the role of technology in the entertainment industry.
According to the organization, the use of artificial intelligence in the audio and audiovisual sector has increased significantly in recent years.
“From automated audiobooks to digital avatars, AI systems are currently replacing talented professional artists because they are often seen as cheaper and more affordable,” the union said.
Many artists working with AI do not get fair wages and do not fully understand their rights without signing employment contracts.
Creators can also use images or audio of artists without their permission. Artists are often asked to sign a confidentiality agreement without providing full details of the work.
“We’ve witnessed the advent of deepfake technology and its often sinister consequences,” added Equity.
The union urged the UK government to take action to protect the rights of artists. The organization believes that the reform of copyright laws should “keep pace with technological development.”
In a comment to the BBC, government officials said they want to ensure that AI is regulated in a way that encourages innovation “while protecting people and our core values”.
“Our national strategy for AI is ten years in advance to harness the power of this technology, and we will lay out our approach to managing it when the time comes,” the officials said.
Recall that in February, South Korean developers created a digital avatar of a presidential candidate to draw the attention of young people to the election.
In April 2021, Deepfake voiced the late chief’s words for a documentary.
