The Block, Mobile Ethereum wallet developer Argent, has raised $40 million in a Series B funding round.

The round was led by venture capital firms Fabric Ventures and Metaplanet, owned by Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn. New investors have joined: Starkware, Jump Crypto and Animoca Brands. Shares in the venture were raised by Paradigm, Index Ventures and Creandum.

The Argent team will use funds to support a wider range of DeFi and Web 3.0 activities.

“We are still very focused on finance, but we want to play a larger role in other areas of non-tradable tokens such as NFT gaming or virtual real estate. “We want to be the de facto gaming wallet,” said Itamar Lesuisse, Argent’s co-founder and CEO.

Users of the app can already store some NFTs by connecting to marketplaces like OpenSea.

Lesuisse said the initiative will also use some of the funding to expand services in Latin America. The priority will be Mexico, where demand is high.

In addition, Argent plans to increase its staff of financial and legal professionals and establish a new research group on L2 protocols.

Argent used Matter Labs’ zkSync Ethereum scaling solution in the wallet. The initiative’s other implementation, Argent X, is based on the competing StarkNet solution from the Starkware project. The latter’s participation in the tour was called “strategic” by Lesuisse.

Recall that in November 2021, Starkware raised $ 50 million at a valuation of $ 2 billion. In March, it became known that after a planned $ 100 million funding round, the value of the venture could rise to $ 6 billion.
