Polkadot team launched the XCM messaging system that allows communication between different parachains. This was reported to ForkLog by project representatives.
“The XCM (cross-consensus messaging) format means that the main goal of the Polkadot network – to be a fully interoperable omnichannel ecosystem – has been achieved,” they said.
The developers noted that messages through XCM channels are protected at the same level as Relay Chain, which is the central hub of the network used by all parallel blockchains.
“Parachains supporting a wide variety of use cases and protocols […] They will be able to use XCM to transfer assets or data among themselves,” he said.
XCM allows not only parachains to communicate, but also smart contracts and Substrate runtime modules.
It is assumed that in a future iteration – XCMP (message passing between chains) – there will be no need to store data in the Relay Chain. It will also be possible to send messages to any blockchain that can decrypt SCALE encoding, including Bitcoin and Ethereum.
“It will be easier for developers in the industry to share their ideas, which will lead to faster diffusion of innovation,” Polkadot said.
The team also upgraded the Statemint public parachain, opening up options for issuing NFTs, teleporting tokens between chains and tracking them.
The developers noted that the emergence of a messaging system in the platform’s ecosystem was greeted with enthusiasm.
“XCM allows us to securely leverage the unique capabilities of our partners’ parachains without having to reinvent the wheel. For example, on Primer we will be able to run a DAO that manages funds in Acala and controls real-world devices through our platform,” said Elliott Tessonier, CTO of Nodle.
Recall that the Primer project was the winner of the third Polkadot parachain auction, and Acala won the first.
