The test is an important milestone not only for the Synchron initiative, the first company to develop brain interfaces, but for the industry as a whole. Today, there are several such companies, but all are still in the process of prototyping and animal research.

Details about the technology

  • According to Synchron, a device called the Stentrode takes about two hours to implant.
  • The first patient to participate in clinical trials is already registered.
  • To do this, use a blood vessel at the base of the neck with the subsequent introduction of a special sensor into the brain.
  • If the tests are successful, the system can be used anywhere and paralyzed patients will be able to reconnect with the outside world.

In this case, the New York-based Synchron company ahead of its well-known competitor Neuralink – A company owned by Ilona Mask. The latter has more funds, but still does not have a clear development strategy and has not fully formed a staff. Last year Neuralink raised $205 million and Synchron just $70 million. Among Synchron’s investors, Bloomberg cites national health institutes.

To date, such projects have only gotten permission for short-term series of experiments in the lab, according to Synchron. However, if the new test series shows positive dynamics, the program will be expanded and patients will be able to use the system for a long time. For example, control digital devices without the help of hands.
