The foldable smartphone is a relatively new concept made popular by Samsung in 2019 with the Z-Fold and Flip phones. In 2023, most major brands launched at least one foldable phone, and Google was the latest to jump on the bandwagon. Even Sony is rumored to be working on a foldable Xperia Compact series smartphone, and it’s clear that no brand would want to miss it.

Rumors on a South Korean forum point to the creation of a complex Sony Xperia Compact. CAD images of the alleged device have also surfaced online, showing a sleek design with a noticeable gap when folded. It reminds us of the first generation Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. This similarity becomes even more concrete when you notice that there is no cover on the device. This seems unusual as most foldable phones on the market have some kind of extra screen that displays notifications and other content.

Other details about the foldable Sony are currently unknown. Also, since there is no concrete information yet, we will not take these renders too seriously. The Xperia Fold (formerly) is expected to be a high-end smartphone, which means its price will also be higher.

Sony’s smartphone business hasn’t been “very” profitable lately. There are several premium phones with impressive hardware in the company’s portfolio, but they’re still not big vendors.
