Apple introduced visionOS, the operating system for the Vision Pro headset

As he reported 24 ChannelsWith visionOS, Apple aims to revolutionize the way users interact with technology by placing digital information on the real environment. The company’s promotional video showcased futuristic concepts such as icons showing the immersive capabilities of the Vision Pro headset and windows hovering over physical space.

Features of the new Apple operating system

The main ways to interact with the headset include eye tracking, hand gestures, and voice commands. Apple demonstrated how users can easily type by looking at the search box and dictating.

Similarly, you can select items by simply pinching your fingers and scroll through windows by swiping up. It’s worth noting that Vision Pro, a feature known as EyeSight, can also view the user’s eyes outside of the headset.

While the headset is positioned as a productivity tool, Apple also highlights its potential as a solid entertainment device.

In one of the demos, Apple showed that a user browsing various apps including Safari, Messages, and Apple Music is “suspended” on a desk in the real world.

The company even demonstrated that it connects a floating keyboard and Vision Pro to a Mac computer, allowing users to magnify their computer screen in a headset.

New generation entertainment center

Apple sees the Vision Pro as a gateway to immersive entertainment. Users can resize the screen by pinching a corner of the window, as shown in a clip from the Foundation TV series.

Additionally, the Apple Scenes feature lets you view content on different backgrounds, including cinematic areas or iconic locations.

The headset will support 3D movies, and according to Disney CEO Bob Iger, Disney has announced its willingness to create content for the platform, and Disney Plus is available from day one.

Other usage scenarios

The Vision Pro’s capabilities are not limited to productivity and entertainment, as it also includes a 3D camera that allows users to take 3D photos and videos that can be viewed inside the headset.

  • Panoramic photos can stretch across the user’s field of view, increasing the immersive effect.
  • Apple has also added spatial enhancements to FaceTime, allowing users using Vision Pro to appear as digital images known as “Personas” that reflect facial and hand movements in real time.
  • To support the Vision Pro ecosystem, Apple is launching a dedicated App Store where users can download Vision Pro apps and compatible apps for iPhone and iPad.

The introduction of VisionOS marks an important milestone for both Apple and developers. With the release of the new Vision Pro title, developers are expected to rush to create innovative applications to exploit the full potential of the platform. Apple hopes to achieve widespread success in a new market for itself with a revolutionary product.
