Developers do not need to make any code changes for their games to run on Apple hardware. This breakthrough opens up new opportunities for Apple computer owners who previously couldn’t count on the release of modern gaming titles.

How do Mac games work?

Apple’s Game Transfer Toolkit is an efficient and convenient solution to transfer games from PC to Mac computers, or so Apple calls it. Apple has simplified the migration process by creating a middleware that emulates the Windows gaming environment, including DirectX11 and DirectX12. This means developers and enthusiasts can now effortlessly migrate existing games to the Apple platform, giving Mac users a wider choice of games.

productivity

Initial reports from testers show that they have already achieved significant success in running demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Diablo IV on the Apple M1 and M2 Max processors. These games generally run well on systems with M2 Max processors, offering a relatively stable 40 frames per second at ultra settings.

However, users with the M1 processor had slightly lower performance, with an average of 15 FPS. Still, games like Diablo IV, Hogwarts Legacy, and even the classic GTA V don’t have performance or compatibility issues.

Enhanced gaming potential on Mac computers

Reddit users are excited to share their experiences playing various DirectX11 and DirectX12 games on Macs running macOS 10.14 Sonoma beta. These positive reviews highlight the Game Porting Toolkit’s broad compatibility, allowing Mac users to immerse themselves in a wider range of gaming possibilities that were previously exclusive to other platforms.

Optimization potential and future prospects

While the Game Porting Toolkit is primarily designed for porting games, Apple has stated that it also offers optimization capabilities. While this feature has not yet been extensively tested, it holds great promise for further improving gaming performance on Mac computers. We can expect even better optimization and enhanced gaming experience for users as developers start using this toolkit to bring games to the Mac platform.

By introducing the Game Porting Toolkit, Apple disproved the idea that macOS is not a game-friendly platform. The software’s ability to emulate the Windows gaming environment and simplify the migration process has opened new doors for developers and gamers alike.

While it’s hard to say that the results are impressive, the platform has potential and we can hope it won’t be long before everything is running at a high level.
