Despite the presence of a captain on the ferry during the movement, the modern automation of the ship allows to minimize human intervention. The captain acts as an observer ready to intervene when necessary, while state-of-the-art ship control algorithms provide precise navigation on the waters.
Extensive testing before the launch of passenger transport confirmed that ship systems have a comprehensive awareness of the environment, similar to what a human captain does.
Erik Nilsson, Torghatten’s operations manager, explained that the ferry is equipped with an array of sensors, including radar, cameras, laser lidar and ultrasonic sonar. These sensors collect data to provide precise route control. Nilsson emphasized that the system can quickly adjust the route of the ferry within fractions of a second by adapting to changing navigational conditions or detecting obstacles.
The 10 meter long MF Estelle, up to 30 passengers and close to costs 1.6 million dollars. Cost of ferry tickets 3 euros one way.
Torghatten plans to expand the production of these innovative ferries and make them available not only in Sweden but also internationally. This has been made possible, in part, by co-operation between private and public institutions, with funding from the European Union.
