Kopas was arrested at the crime scene and initially held on $1 million bail. He was charged with aggravated assault that caused serious bodily injury. But when 52-year-old Daniel Piedra Garcia died, he was charged with murder and bail was increased to $1.5 million.

Reasons

Copas claims he thought Garcia kidnapped him and got him out of the United States. According to her testimony, the passenger was on her way to meet her boyfriend at a casino in El Paso. Along the way, he saw a sign pointing to the Mexican city of Juarez, 11 kilometers from El Paso. This sign didn’t mean they were already there, it just meant that the city was ahead. Kopas then pulled a “silver-brown gun” from his bag and shot the driver several times. The car crashed into the barriers without stopping on the highway.

Police said the woman did not attempt to call police before or immediately after she opened fire. Court documents state that after she was shot, she first took a photo of the victim and sent the photo to her boyfriend. At that time, 911 was called, and when the cops arrived, they found Kopas’ boyfriend pulling her out of the smashed Nissan. When he got out, the officers saw that he had “thrown everything he was holding onto the ground,” including the gun. The police already called an ambulance.

Garcia, who had been an Uber driver for just three weeks, was critically injured at the scene and was on life support for five days, but his family decided to disconnect when doctors told his family he would be on a ventilator for the rest of his life.

My aunt didn’t want to see him suffer. But to be honest, we don’t think we’ve made the decision to close. This decision was made on his behalf the moment the bullets hit his head.
– said Didi Lopez, the niece of the murdered driver.

Safety at Uber

  • Uber has several options for keeping passengers safe, including an in-app emergency call button that sends real-time location and ride information directly to the police.
  • The app also features a Live Assist feature that combines drivers with an ADT safety agent and RideCheck to check drivers and drivers to make sure they are safe in the event of a long unexpected stop or possible accident.
