Known as the Electric Hummer Hummer with DSVBased on the civilian version of the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV). General Motors’ decision to use its new Ultium electric platform for this military concept marks an important step towards electrification for military needs.

While the Hummer isn’t the first choice when it comes to electric vehicles, General Motors took the initiative to use the Ultium electric platform for this particular project. Despite the relatively low demand forecasts, the company embarked on limited production, resulting in valuable experience that ultimately led to the creation of the new Silverado electric pickup truck.

Characteristics of the military Hummer EV

The military electric vehicle shares the same chassis and drivetrain as the Hummer EV. It is equipped with a reliable battery with a capacity of 200 kWh, which provides sufficient power for complex military operations. However, due to the heavier weight and different aerodynamics, the vehicle’s range is expected to be slightly less compared to the civilian Hummer EV, which claims 530km range.

A GM Defense representative says the military-grade Hummer still offers a reasonable 300 miles on a single charge. In addition, the vehicle is equipped with a diesel generator as a backup power source in case of need.

GM Defense has already demonstrated its prowess in producing electric military vehicles in the past. The company had previously developed an electric pickup truck equipped with a 66 kWh battery for the US Army.

As this new electric military vehicle undergoes rigorous testing, its performance and capabilities will be closely watched. Its success could pave the way for further electrification of military fleets, helping to create a cleaner and more sustainable defense sector.
