Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, first introduced the Cybertruck in 2019, but production has faced numerous delays. Production and delivery were originally scheduled for 2021, but Tesla has repeatedly delayed deadlines due to component shortages.

In July 2022, Musk set a new production schedule for summer 2023. During the meeting and discussion of Tesla’s Q1 2023 earnings, Musk also promised to arrange delivery of the Cybertruck by the end of the third quarter.

At Tesla’s annual shareholders meeting in May 2023, Musk expressed confidence, saying the company could potentially ship 250,000 to 500,000 units per year once full-scale production begins. The automaker was planning to start mass production at the end of this year.

Industry analysts are eagerly awaiting Tesla’s second-quarter earnings call scheduled for Wednesday, July 19, as they seek more precise details on Cybertruck’s production, delivery and specifications.

Small problems of a big car

While Tesla attributes the delays to typical supply chain issues, the leaked documents shed light on other fundamental flaws in the car’s design and engineering. In January 2022, a whistleblower gave the German Handelsblatt publication more than 100 gigabytes of files, which revealed serious problems with the braking, drivetrain, suspension, sealing and construction of pre-production prototypes.
