China connects world’s largest wind turbine to grid

Located at the Fujian Offshore Wind Farm in the Taiwan Strait, the massive wind turbine is designed to withstand an impressive 290 km/h wind, demonstrating its durability and stability even in extreme weather conditions. Its enormous capacity will meet the energy needs of approximately 36,000 Chinese households, making a significant contribution to clean and sustainable electricity.

The heart of this gigantic structure are huge blades, each reaching 123 meters in length. The combined weight of these three large wings is 54 tons. The “engine room” at the top of the tower where the generator is located adds another 385 tons to the turbine’s weight. The blades slicing the air form a huge circle with an area of approximately 50,000 square meters, delivering an impressive 34.2 kWh energy harvest per revolution. Due to its outstanding performance, the annual output of this turbine is estimated to reach an impressive 66 GWh.

In the region where the generators are installed, a “near storm” phenomenon is observed in which the wind speed continuously exceeds 51 km/h for more than 200 days a year. The facility’s wind resistance has been carefully calculated at 287 km/h, exceeding the wind speed recorded during the record-breaking hurricane-force typhoon peaking at 260 km/h in 1979.

China is focusing on the further development of wind energy technologies, the country is already eyeing even larger turbines. The plan is to install or start an 18-megawatt turbine whose height will exceed the height of a 70-story building.
