Gapinski called it the Android Tesla project. This way you can have the Android Auto interface that you can access via the car’s built-in web browser. However, this process is not quite as simple as one might expect.

how does everything work

To implement Android Tesla, you will need:

  • Raspberry Pi 4 to run Android,
  • Raspberry Pi 3 or higher to run Linux (responsible for capturing video and mixing it to a Tesla computer via Wi-Fi),
  • Additional cards for HDMI and LTE,
  • and cables to tie it all together.

After installing the software and transferring all the equipment to the machine, you can connect Tesla to a Wi-Fi Pi network and enter the IP address in the Tesla web browser, where you can use Android. From there, you can launch an app that manages CarPlay and Android Auto and gives you access to your phone’s own music interface, maps, and more.

Judging by the video uploaded by Gapinsky, the installation process is not the easiest in life, but as a result everything works fine and without complaints.

The project is still under development. Gapinski’s website says that in the future installation won’t require two Raspberry Pis and just one Raspberry Pi 4 will suffice, which is pretty far from a one or two step installation process after all.

While the ability to run CarPlay is a big advantage of Tesla Android, it can also work with Android Auto. Additionally, there is a full Android tablet interface that you can use for things like web browsing and even running diagnostics, but obviously you shouldn’t be doing any of this while driving.
