The European Union’s project to adopt a single charger for smartphones and other electronic devices seems to be starting to work at Apple. The Cupertino company, which was very reluctant to this idea, testing prototype iPhones with a USB-C portAccording to Bloomberg.

The media also points out that anonymous sources have said that Apple is preparing an adapter for future USB-C phones to work with accessories designed for the Lightning proprietary connector available from iPhone 5 to iPhone 13.

iPhone could embrace USB-C port

For now, other Apple devices have no data to carry. However, if the iPhone takes this step because it has to comply with future legislation or the need to unify connections, the company may extend it to products that haven’t yet adopted USB-C.

In fact, this is what the European Union wants. The unique charger recommendation aims to prevent users from needing a new charger and cable every time we buy a new device. Categories include mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headsets, handheld game consoles and portable speakers.

Following the Bloomberg report, we’re seeing a shift in attitude from Apple, which has claimed in the past that the initiative will hurt innovation and create too much waste if consumers have to replace their chargers. The European Parliament stressed last April that the proposal is part of a larger effort to advance the sustainability of products.
