According to Mark Gurman BloombergApple plans to fully update the Apple Watch before the device’s tenth anniversary. In the latest issue of the Power On newsletter, Gurman refers to the updated device as the “Apple Watch X”, similar to the 2017 iPhone X, which celebrates the “iPhone” decade. Since the original Apple Watch was launched in 2014 and was released in 2015, Gürman isn’t sure if the Apple Watch X will launch in 2024 or 2025.

Apple is apparently working on a thinner case for the Apple Watch X and different ways to attach a strap to the device. The mechanism for attaching the straps to the Apple Watch case has remained unchanged since the device’s appearance, ensuring that the straps are compatible with different Apple Watch generations.

People involved in the development of the new Apple Watch models told Gourmet that the existing bracelet system takes up a lot of space, and it could be better used for larger batteries or other internal components. As such, Apple is currently considering a magnetic strap attachment system, but it’s unclear at this time whether it will be ready for the Apple Watch X.

The Apple Watch X could coincide with Apple’s introduction of microLED display technology that surpasses the color and clarity of existing OLED displays. It could also be the first Apple Watch to feature a blood pressure function.

Gürman added that the Apple Watch Series 9 will only be a “small update”, similar to the incremental updates the device has received in recent years. The new devices are expected to have faster processors and new color options, but other than that, they’ll be largely the same as the current models. Gürman says this is “probably the smallest update in product history”.

As a result, Gurman says that Apple has recently considered moving away from the annual Apple Watch update cycle to roll out more important updates less frequently. He noted that the iPad started with an annual renewal cycle, but that has now slowed to a refresh at around 18 months.
