Bloomberg reports that Foxconn has started production iPhone 15 in India to bridge the gap between its operations in India and its main manufacturing base in China. Apple has long talked about its desire to reduce dependence on Chinese production, so over the past few years it has been gradually increasing production in India. The iPhone 15 smartphones will be manufactured at the Foxconn factory in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
Interestingly, the Indian plant will start deliveries just a few weeks after the Chinese plant. Before the iPhone 14 was launched, production in India lagged about 6-9 months behind supply from China.
This is also the first time mass production of certain iPhone models has started in India ahead of their official launch. For example, last year’s iPhone 14 started production in India at the end of September.
The scale of iPhone 15 production in India depends on availability of imported components and expansion of production lines. Pegatron and Wistron factories are also expected to begin assembly of the iPhone 15 soon. In addition, DigiTimes reported that Foxconn plans to start manufacturing AirPods in India by the end of 2024.
