Google and Samsung will launch a competitor to Apple’s Vision Pro but delay it for a year

Google and Samsung are known for their many years of successful collaborations. They often share technology, learn from each other’s software and hardware expertise, and even produce collaborative products like Tensor processors for Pixel smartphones. But this time something went wrong.

What’s going on between companies?

  • Project delayed as Insider journalists learned differences between companies, Samsung’s concerns about technology privacy, and lack of clarity in responsibilities.
  • Also, as Wccftech wrote, the developers have been slowed down by the loud presentation of the Vision Pro. Apple has raised the bar in the headphone market by offering futuristic designs, impressive features and never-before-seen displays. Therefore, to create good competition, Samsung engineers need to send their prototypes to scrap metal and start over.

This project involves mixing virtual and augmented reality. It seems that at Google they had to work on the software and at Samsung on the hardware, namely the iron itself.

It is not yet known whether we will see the finished product in the summer of 2024 or just wait for its announcement. The Wccftech publication believes the second option is the most likely: there will be a rollout in June with some specs to be announced, and a full launch of the product will take place in 2025. Apple did the same: the presentation of the Vision Pro took place on June 6, 2023, and sales are scheduled to begin only in 2024.

According to rumors, Samsung’s recycled prototype had a lackluster design and was powered by the Exynos 2200 (the processor used in the Galaxy S22, known for its inefficiency and tendency to overheat). Unlike Apple’s Vision Pro, this unnamed AR headset had an internal battery and was not connected to an external battery.
