OnePlus Open: Release Date, Price and Specifications

OnePlus is finally entering the foldable phone market. It’s been a while, but it might be worth the wait. OnePlus had plenty of time to learn from the mistakes and successes of its competitors. Its own mothership, OPPO, now has three foldable phones. Suffice it to say that OnePlus is in the best position to make a great foldable phone. Sources suggest that the “OnePlus Fold” (which will likely launch as “OnePlus Open”) will be a premium device with all the flagship benefits. That’s all we know for now.

Is OnePlus foldable?

The marketing name for OnePlus’ foldable phone may still be up in the air, but the device is definitely in the works. In fact, it might be just around the corner (more on that in the next section). After years of rumors, OnePlus first announced that the OnePlus Foldable will launch in 2023 during the launch of the OnePlus 11. Later, during MWC 2023 in February, OnePlus further confirmed the launch details of the upcoming foldable phone. So yes, we’ll see the OnePlus Fold this year, or whatever the company decides to call it.

What will the OnePlus Foldable be called?

Until recently, OnePlus Foldable was unofficially called OnePlus Fold or OnePlus V Fold. Presumably, the media decided on the Fold name because of its book-style form factor and many large, foldable devices being called Fold.

That all changed on July 6 when frequent leakster Max Jambor announced that the device would be called the OnePlus Open. The name also appeared in the EUIPO application earlier this year, along with Wing, Edge, Peak, and Prime. OnePlus actually confirmed it via name to post On Twitter on July 26. “WE DISCOVERED OTHERS FOLDING,” the company said in its tweet. This is the closest we can get to an official name right now.

What is the OnePlus Open release date?

A leak via reporter Max Jambor on July 13 showed that the foldable OnePlus will launch on August 26. Another source confirmed that the date is August 26. So it seems more likely that this could be the actual launch date. However, recent rumors suggested that OnePlus delayed the launch due to display issues. Another prominent insider said that the OnePlus Open was also delayed due to OPPO’s ongoing patent dispute with Nokia. He said the phone is expected in late September or early October.

The phone is expected to launch globally, including markets like the US and India. The UK should also be on the OnePlus launch list. As for the rest of Europe, the availability of OnePlus Open may differ between countries due to the legal battle with Nokia.

What features and specifications will OnePlus Open have?

The OnePlus Open is not a foldable device, meaning it cannot be folded and unfolded like a clamshell phone. OnePlus is sticking with a more traditional book format with a build that should be pretty self explanatory with all the leaked images shown in this article.

The company didn’t make much of an official statement about the foldable phone, but promised “branded OnePlus speed and fluidity.” We hope this means a smooth build, minimal screen clutter, and clear software. Fortunately, sources have given us something to think about. Well-known whistleblower Steve Hemmerstoffer has shared everything from visuals to full specs for the OnePlus Open.

Design

All-black renders of OnePlus’ foldable phone show a relatively thin foldable device with some interesting design choices. We see straight edges, a leather back that feels good to hold when used correctly, and a warning slider on the left, which is rare for a foldable phone.

The large circular camera cutout on the back of the device is reminiscent of the OnePlus 11 and houses a total of three Hasselblad branded cameras. There is also a hole in the left corner of the folding screen and in the middle of the screen on the cover.

Note that Hemmerstoffer later retracted the images he shared initially as not entirely accurate. In these images, the phone looked more like the Galaxy Z Fold 5, while in the new images (as you can see in this article), the phone looks more compatible with the OPPO Find N2. This makes a lot more sense given the close ties between OnePlus and OPPO.

The leaker Max Jambor added that the phone will be available in green or black, and later revealed that the colors will be called Voyage Black and Emerald Eclipse.

Features and features

OnePlus Open looks like a flagship. It is said to have a 7.8-inch 2K AMOLED display inside and a 6.3-inch AMOLED display on the front. Both displays are expected to support 120Hz refresh rate, but there may be differences in minimum refresh rates if LTPO technology is different.

Tipster Digital Chat Station claimed on August 22 that the OPPO Find N3 will have the highest pixel density among foldable screens. Of course, it is believed that the Find N3 will be released outside of China under the name OnePlus Open. The leaker specifically said that you can expect a 7.82-inch 2268×2440 foldable display and a 6.31-inch 2484×1116 smartphone screen.

The performance is said to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and a massive 16GB of RAM. The leaked specs only mention 256GB of internal storage but we may see other storage tiers as well. The 4800mAh battery can be equipped with 67W fast charging. The report doesn’t mention wireless charging but we can’t rule out this feature until the phone launches.

In the camera section, we can see a 48MP primary sensor, a 48MP ultra-wide sensor and a 64MP telephoto sensor. The cover screen has a 32-megapixel selfie camera while the inner display can have a 20-megapixel selfie camera.

Jambor specifically claimed that the OnePlus Open will have a 3x periscope camera. So it looks like the 64MP sensor will have good zoom capabilities.

The phone will likely ship with Oxygen 13.1 based on Android 13 but will be the primary candidate for Android 14 once the software becomes stable. But a July 7 leak suggests that the software is called Oxygen OS Fold. This will probably have a lot to do with OPPO’s Color OS for advanced devices.

According to Max Jambor, Open could be pretty powerful for a foldable device. Reportedly tested for 400,000 bends; that’s double the number of bends tested on the Galaxy Z Fold 5. If you fold the phone 100 times a day, this phone will last you 10 to 11 years.

What will be the price of OnePlus Open?

Given that this is OnePlus’ first foldable phone, there’s no precedent for us to estimate how much it will cost. But we certainly don’t expect it to be less than $1,000. When OPPO entered the fight for advanced devices, it launched the Find N, which costs around $ 1,200. This phone now has a sequel, the Find N2, which starts at CNY 7,999 (~$1,108) for the same price. One could argue that OnePlus Open, a sub-brand of OPPO, will follow a similar starting pricing strategy and be significantly cheaper than models like the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Pixel Fold. Even a price tag of around $1,500 might be reasonable for OnePlus, depending on how many units you plan to carry. Source
