Apple will use advanced display technology for iPhone 16 series

A recent report from Korean media outlet TheElec has revealed that Apple is considering a major upgrade for the upcoming iPhone 16 series display. The tech giant has reportedly contacted two major suppliers, Samsung and LG, to evaluate the feasibility of using Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology in OLED displays.

MLA technology represents a new frontier in OLED display architecture. It aims to replace the traditional microlens array (MLA) with a uniform pattern of billions of microlenses on the display panel. This innovation has both advantages and problems, which prompts Apple to carefully consider the implementation.

One of the key benefits of MLA is its ability to significantly reduce internal reflections. This allows it to increase screen brightness while reducing power consumption, resulting in longer battery life, a feature that smartphone users desire.

However, this progress is not without its drawbacks. The most noticeable disadvantage for an ordinary consumer is the possible narrowing of the viewing angle of the screen from the sides. In addition, the use of MLA technology can increase production costs, and Apple undoubtedly takes this factor into account in its decision-making.

Apple hopes to increase front brightness by adopting MLA and increasing the amount of light directed to the front of the user. However, the extent of this improvement depends on the efficiency of the OLED material set, which differs between the two domestic panel manufacturers.

Apple is currently in the process of evaluating whether to integrate this advanced OLED option into the iPhone 16 models, which are expected to be released in the second half of next year. This solution will ultimately shape the next generation of iPhone displays, balancing innovation with practicality and cost. Source
