The iPhone 14 Pro’s camera was good. Better now. Last September 18 afternoon, iOS 17 arrived decisively on all compatible iPhones. A version with announced improvements and some changes we didn’t plan: Apple changed the way the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max handle images.

Additionally, they can now finally shoot in high resolution mode. Last year, it was necessary to choose ProRAW to shoot at 48 megapixel resolution. With the new update, we can shoot at 48 megapixel resolution in both HEIF and JPEG formats. Worth it? The answer is a definite yes.

The improvements we will describe only apply to the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max (except for one big change that we will detail later). These are the only iPhones along with the iPhone 15. 48 megapixel sensor. Therefore, they are the only ones that can shoot in high resolution mode.

Note that if you choose the high efficiency shooting mode, you will be shooting in HEIF. If you choose JPEG, which is the most compatible, and take a 48 MP photo, you will take a 10 MB photo.

As one might expect, shooting at higher resolution will translate into more detail. Fortunately, It goes much further. Shooting at 48 megapixel resolution means taking advantage of the full size of the sensor. The image processing is different from the classic 4-1, which offers 12 megapixel output, and the results speak for themselves.

What may seem like a minor change to the most inexperienced eye is one of the most remarkable leaps in processing (automatic speech) in Apple’s history. Highlights are better controlled in the photo on the right, taken at 48 megapixel resolution. more details (in fact, it is much closer to the details of ProRAW than 12 MP automatic photography) and also noteworthy: better color rendition.

But we’re not talking about the classic washout we usually experience when manufacturers want to eliminate noise, we’re talking about a noticeably cleaner image when we shoot at 48 megapixel resolution. Big change that looks set to trickle down to more models

It looked like a sentence. From generation to generation, iPhones have burned a little more than other rivals. I upgraded to iOS 17, went up to the window, took one of my obligatory photos every time I tested the phone, and… did not burn.

The question is how many iPhones benefit from this change. Via social networks quite a few examples it shows the same: no more burnt photos, controlled skies and a slight improvement in post-processing load, now less aggressive. They’ve already started a thread on Reddit commenting on the significant improvement in old washes.

According to our tests, noticeable improvements are seen in 48-megapixel shooting in HDR (in any shooting mode) and, above all, in HEIF/JPEG. In fact, if you’re willing to “pay” 5MB per photo (versus 1MB for 12MP), I’d say the 48-megapixel mode is viable. Must be standard shooting mode.
