The new setting is separate from iPhone’s previous Optimized Battery Charging feature; This feature learns the device’s daily charging routine and intelligently delays charging by more than 80% until a more convenient time. When the 80% hardware limit is enabled, the iPhone will never charge above this level.
All iPhone 15 models have three options under Settings → Battery → Battery and Charge Status → Charging Optimization:
As with Optimized Battery Charging, a hard cap of 80% can extend iPhone battery life by reducing the time it takes to fully charge.
The new setting was previously noticed by software researcher Steve Moser in the iOS 17 code. Apple says all iPhone 15 models have the same battery life as the iPhone 14 models, and the devices are launching this Friday.
