The iPhone 15 Pro includes a big change that most people will never know about: a redesigned internal body architecture that makes repairs much easier (and cheaper). A new review posted on YouTube today offers a closer look at this change, along with new camera hardware and more.
During the launch of the iPhone 15 Pro at the Wonderlust event last week, Apple specifically presented a new design of the device’s casing. Apple said iPhone 15 Pro repairs have become easier thanks to its “new internal chassis architecture” that allows “easily replacing the back glass.”
This means that rear glass repairs for the iPhone 15 Pro are now significantly cheaper. 9to5Mac first reported last week. This is the same change that first appeared on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus last year.
“If you need to replace the back glass, all you have to do is heat the back glass, remove the back glass, and unplug the flex cable from the back of the motherboard,” PBKreviews explains in today’s teardown. You can also see the MagSafe charging coil, LED flash and microphone inputs on the rear glass.
Here’s a random piece of information that I realized probably means nothing: There is no branding or logo on the aluminum inner cover of the iPhone 15 Pro’s A17 Pro chip. The iPhone 14 Pro chip, on the other hand, is clearly marked with the A16 Bionic logo. I wonder if Apple made this change to avoid leaking the new “A17 Pro” branding.
I’m not very good at writing about disassembly, so I’ll give you the video below to get the full experience. Our friends at iFixit will also be tearing down the iPhone 15 Pro with more details on repairability, likely in the next few days.
