Just yesterday, we published iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max analyzes on Xataka. Devices that have their pros and cons but have important new features, especially in the field of photography. One of the functions that surprised me the most was automatic portrait.

I believe this is an innovation that may have been overlooked and will mark a before and after when it comes to the matter. take portrait photosAnd on a phone, this concept couldn’t make more sense: everything being done automatically.

How does Apple’s Auto Portrait Mode work?

Apple is following the path of manufacturers like Google: applying the maximum capacity of AI to both the camera app and the photo app. The big news this year is something we haven’t seen from any other manufacturer: in almost every photo, both automatically and tap to focus If it’s not very clear that we want photo X to be a portrait.

In photos of people or animals, the phone can recognize the subject to automatically create a depth map (something the rest of its rivals do). What surprises me is that this depth map does not take up additional space.

How did I verify this? Shooting without portrait mode (12 MP) with the iPhone 14 Pro and shooting in automatic mode (active portrait) with the iPhone 15 Pro and reducing the resolution to 12 MP from the settings. Conclusion: photos cover the same thinghence, internal storage is not compromised.

In cases where this mode is not automatically activated, all we have to do is click on the element of the photo to which we want to apply the portrait. As soon as you press it, ‘f’ will activate and this will tell us that the portrait is active.

Then in settings We can adjust the amount of bokehChoose the focal point and edit the photo to your liking.

Why does this point to a new path?

In a traditional camera, depth of field is automatic and inevitable. We can regulate the amount of blur by changing the aperture, which is a manual process used in such cameras.

On the phone, Shooting in portrait mode is often a bit boring. The preview shows us something completely different from the final result and is usually only useful to know whether we are shooting in portrait or not.

Apple’s new feature allows us to solve both problems: the additional time required to enable portrait and check if the object is out of focus, and the lack of usefulness of the preview issue.

Now all you have to do is aim at the subjectCheck if ‘f’ is active and let’s worry about leaving the photo to our liking in the gallery (if it isn’t already active when we open it).

The automatic question now is how long will it take for Android manufacturers to implement this functionality; This is more than is possible with current power (and the power of future Generation 3).
