Yesterday, Google unveiled its two high-end offerings, the Google Pixel 8 and Google Pixel 8 Pro. The ambition is bigger than ever: improvements at the processor level, the promise of seven years of operating system updates and a greatly improved camera system, especially on the Pro model.
We will explain in detail how the camera set of these two devices, which come with the aim of becoming among the best references in mobile photography every year, works.

Google Pixel 8 Pro is one of the most complete sets
At the photography hardware level, the Google Pixel 8 Pro is one of the most complete offerings today. Despite this, the main sensor, which has been used for a year, attracts attention. Google didn’t specify the data, but there are two clues that tell us what it is: The Google page indicates that it’s a “large, improved sensor with f/1.65 aperture,” meaning the changes in brightness come from lenses that: It’s actually been refreshed.
As for the sensor, its 1/1.31 inch size once again reveals it to be the Samsung Isocell GN1. The GN2 is much larger, measuring 1/1.12 inches, so skipping is ignored. This means the Google Pixel 8 Pro has the same 2023 sensor as the Google Pixel 7 Pro and Google Pixel 6 Pro.
second room one 48 megapixel ultra wide angle with macro functions. The most important thing here is the resolution: it’s the highest in pixels ever seen and well above the 12-megapixel cameras we usually see. The lens is also quite bright, f/1.95.
The big change in brightness this year comes with lenses
Thanks to the new lenses, Google states: These Pixels are 21% more sensitive to light than the previous generation. Likewise, they state that autofocus will work much faster in low-light photos.
Finally, we have a 5x telephoto lens with 48 megapixel resolution and is compatible with Super High Definition Zoom. This means that it can digitally achieve up to 30x magnification and there won’t be much loss of quality in the process. This telephoto aperture is f/2.8, which is in line with what we usually see in today’s advanced technologies.
Regarding the Google Pixel 8, we have the same main camera and lens, so the results should be the same. The main difference is that this phone doesn’t have a telephoto sensor and its ultra-wide angle is 12 megapixels, and it has a much less bright lens (f/2.2). Therefore, it is the commitment to the main camera, although it inherits the most important thing from the Pixel 8 Pro: AI.
Everything is a bet on artificial intelligence
The least important thing on a Pixel is the camera sensors (to some extent, of course). Google’s commitment is to artificial intelligenceThe main reason for these devices. Google was a pioneer in computational photography, and this generation would be no less. Pixels continue to be the Androids that try the most to adjust the skin tone according to reality with the ‘Real Tone’ technology, which they have introduced another innovation in this generation.
‘True Tone’ now works on video too, so the phone analyzes the person’s skin tone in real time and automatically adjusts it. Speaking of video, Google claims that it is on par with Apple with the iPhone 15 Pro Max and even beats it when it comes to HDR.
New star function Video Boostis a system where our video is uploaded to the Google cloud and processed to obtain a high quality video with improved dynamic range. In addition, if we shoot a night video, it is also possible to process it with technology. Night vision (Pixel night mode), so we will have a video in night mode, something we have not seen before.
In case of Google Pixel 8 Pro, manual controls For the first time, we’re bringing something that many photography enthusiasts have been wanting for years to a Pixel. This mode not only lets you control shutter speed, temperature, focus, ISO, and more. 50 megapixel RAW and JPEG.
For the first time we will have access to high-resolution 50-megapixel images on a Pixel; This is an innovation that has been completely overlooked and could represent a before and after for the Pixel if the quality is as expected.
AI doesn’t just apply to taking photos: it’s the subsequent editing that counts. Google Pixel 8 launches ‘Best Shot’ function. It will allow swapping of subjects’ faces using AI. If we don’t come out smiling or with the desired facial expression, AI can fix it. It is not yet known to what extent this is a completely artificial change by combining previous footage or directly using artificial intelligence.
To top it off, Google editor will let you modify photos up to the limit. Change the sky, the location of the subject… Using artificial intelligence, we can transform the photo into whatever we want, even if it is not real. In short, a set that improves thanks to new lenses and invests everything in artificial intelligence.
