Just a few hours ago, Google introduced the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones, and a video tearing apart the younger model has already appeared on the internet.

Disassembly of the Pixel 8 should start with the display, which also acts as a heatsink. Inside, everything is pretty standard: you need to unscrew 14 screws to get to the motherboard. Google has provided tabs for quick battery removal, but they’re not very useful: the battery is too glued on.

The same can be said for the cover, which is glued almost tightly to the side frame. You will have to disassemble the entire smartphone to replace the glass that protects the main camera’s lenses.

Overall conclusion: The Pixel 8 is pretty easy to disassemble, but you’ll have to fiddle with the adhesive. And not all components (the cap and glass that protect the lenses) can be easily replaced. So only 7 out of 10 points for sustainability.
