The authors of the resource 9to5mac published an article with interesting data on how the new Apple gadget is being developed. Work on the Apple project began in 2015. The company planned to release the AR headset much earlier – in 2022-2023, but in the development process it faced a number of problems due to the constant delay of the release.

How was Apple’s AR headset developed?

As early as 2016, the team responsible for the project showed management very early prototypes. There were several of them, and they were quite different from each other.

Some were running Windows, some were modified HTC Vive models or redesigned series products from other companies. One prototype was so heavy that a “small crane” was needed to hold it on its head. As a result, management decided to support the project, partly because of fears that Facebook could quickly develop its own similar headset.

Technical difficulties and competition

As with Apple’s most ambitious new products like the iPhone in the past, technical issues have been a major cause of delays. But the Apple smartphone also had an extremely influential figure in the personality of Steve Jobs.

Although current Apple CEO Tim Cook supports the headset project, he has not been as active in iPhone development as Jobs, according to five people familiar with the project. For example, according to these individuals, he rarely visited a group of project developers at their offices far from Apple’s main campus. People say the lack of authority to defend a headset codenamed N301 like Cook sometimes makes it difficult to compete with other products like the Mac and iPhone in terms of personnel and engineering resources.

However, another influential figure from Apple – chief designer Johnny Ive – was generally against the project, believing that users did not want to wear such a device on their heads for a long time. Quince also believed that virtual reality divided people.

From virtual to augmented reality

However, this is the reason why the headset has evolved from a virtual reality device to a mixed reality headset.

In addition, the project team revealed an interesting detail: equipping the headset with an external display. The image from the device’s built-in camera would be displayed on it. In this way, people around the user could see his eyes. Only a few people were aware of this feature of the product, which has been developed for a long time.

The authors of the article also state that they will talk about the turning point in the development of the device in 2019 later. Probably, it is said that at that time I decided to abandon the project, which provided for the existence of a separate external unit headset with a computer platform. Instead, it was decided to choose a less productive, but more independent device.

Eventually, it became known that Apple was working on AR glasses that would work with the iPhone. Exactly when it will be released is unknown.
