Since the launch of the Pixel series in 2016, Google has sold nearly 40 million Pixel smartphones. This is a significant milestone for the company, even though it is still a small player in the global smartphone market.
This data comes on the heels of the launch of the Pixel 8 series this week. According to Francisco Geronimo, vice president of international research firm IDC, Google sold 37.9 million Pixel phones between 2016 and 2023. “Sales have increased by double digits over the last few years, with total sales reaching approximately 40 million units since its launch in 2016,” Geronimo said.
That might not seem like much compared to Apple, which ships more than 224 million iPhones each year, but it shows that users are increasingly turning to Pixel phones. In fact, Google has managed to maintain and increase its market share in two important markets, the US and Japan.
In Japan, Pixel is now the best-selling Android brand and is even taking away market share from the iPhone. In North America, Google was the only smartphone brand whose sales did not decrease from year to year.
Last year, Google sold 27.6 million units before the launch of the Pixel 7, approaching the 30 million mark. That means Google sold nearly 10 million Pixel phones last year; This is potentially Pixel’s best year yet. The previous record was 7.2 million units.
Google’s success in these markets is likely due to a number of factors, including a focus on clean software, AI features, and timely updates. It will be interesting to see how the company fares in the coming years as it competes with established players like Apple and Samsung.
