Pro iPhones received a new chip this year, while base devices retained last year’s A16 chip. Many may have guessed that Apple was overhauling the motherboards of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max to create new standard models. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.

According to iFixit’s lead teardown technician Shahrama MokhtariiPhone 15 is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon X70 modem. This is the same modem used in the iPhone 15 Pro and offers some notable upgrades over the X65 modem used in the iPhone 14. The modem is said to be more energy efficient and provides better signal reception over long distances.

This means Apple didn’t just recycle the iPhone 14 Pro’s motherboard to create the iPhone 15. Instead, it redesigned and updated some internal components.

However, the internal structure of the iPhone 15 is generally very similar to the iPhone 14. iFixit gave the device a repairability score of 4 out of 10 because Apple often combines parts with software components, making them difficult to repair.

Thanks to the updated interior, the 15 and 15 Plus also support new features such as satellite roadside assistance and collision detection. They also include Apple’s latest UWB chip with the 15 Pro and Pro Max, although “Thread networking technology” for potentially updated integration with smart home devices remains exclusive to the A17 Pro-based models.
