iPhone 15 Pro Max received an outstanding camera score in the DxOMark test with a total of 154 points. This puts it second in DxOMark’s global camera rankings, just two points behind the Huawei P60 Pro. DxOMark has now announced the performance of the selfie camera and, like last year, the iPhone 15 Pro Max was at the top.

The smartphone topped the selfie camera rating with 149 points, four points higher than its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Both the iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max share the same 12-megapixel front camera with a 1/3.6-inch sensor, autofocus, and optical image stabilization. However, DxOMark attributes the superior performance of the iPhone 15 Pro Max to the new A17 Pro chip and Image Signal Processor (ISP).

The selfie camera impresses with accurate exposure, fast and accurate autofocus, wide dynamic range and high detail in daylight. DxOMark also praises the effective video stabilization, which works smoothly even if the user moves while recording.

However, the camera is not perfect. The phone’s sensor supports a wide depth of field, but this can also lead to noticeable noise in images even in good lighting conditions. When recording video, the camera can sometimes display color errors and sharpness can sometimes vary from frame to frame.

Similarly, in portrait mode, the Face ID module accurately calculates the depth, creating a gradual and natural background blur effect (or bokeh). But as the photo example shows, Apple struggles with small details like individual hairs that, upon closer inspection, make portrait mode look like a software simulation.
