IDC Analyst Francisco Geronimo reported that despite serious supply problems, Apple’s iPhone 13 was the world’s best-selling smartphone in the first quarter of this year.
IDC does not disclose the total number of devices sold and the market share of the phones. The company reminds that the iPhone 12 and iPhone 11 are the best-selling phones of 2021 and 2020, respectively, so the iPhone 13 was expected to have similar results. Offering the Apple A15 Bionic SoC, dual cameras, a 6.1-inch burst screen and iOS 15, the iPhone 13 retails for $800 in the US.
The 6.7-inch iPhone 13 Pro Max took second place in the first quarter of 2022; this means people are willing to pay more for a bigger screen, improved camera and long battery life.
The 6.1-inch iPhone 13 Pro took an honorable fourth place, while the tiny 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini failed to make it to the top five. The latter once again clarifies the rumors about Apple’s decision to abandon the iPhone mini. In total, the iPhone 13 family accounts for 84% of iPhone’s total revenue in the first three months of 2022. The rest of the revenue comes from the iPhone SE (2022) and the older iPhone 12 and iPhone 11. Analysts believe that the iPhone 14 can be even more successful.
Apple’s two 6.1-inch iPhone models ranked in the top five in the last quarter. But perhaps more importantly, the 6.7-inch Apple Pro sells better than the 6.1-inch version. Thus, the new generation 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max could be an extremely profitable model for Apple. It will offer everything consumers love in its usual Apple bestseller, but in a larger form factor that will be far more affordable than the Pro series.
The entry-level Samsung Galaxy A12 finished the first quarter in third place, while the mid-range Galaxy A32 finished fifth.
