How does the titanium case protect Xiaomi 14 Pro from damage?

Xiaomi decided to use TA-2 titanium, which has a purity of up to 99%, unlike the titanium-aluminum alloy in the iPhone 15 Pro. The manufacturing process of such a smartphone is more complex and its cost is higher.

Xiaomi explained why it chose titanium over the more common stainless steel or other materials. A Xiaomi representative said that titanium is widely used in aerospace, medicine, high-end sports equipment and other fields because its unique physical and chemical properties have advantages that other materials cannot match. It is light, strong and corrosion resistant.

Engineers have modeled that if the Xiaomi 14 Pro uses a medium stainless steel frame, the smartphone will be heavier. Despite the stainless steel and aluminum alloy weight reduction solution, the smartphone is still 8.34 grams heavier than the titanium model. In addition, titanium metal also has special properties such as “slander”, that is, the curved part will harden, which will make the corners of Xiaomi 14 Pro stronger after bending and shaping.

The material becomes stronger during deformation: this means that in case of drops and impacts, its hardness immediately increases, which should protect the smartphone from damage. Xiaomi also applied ceramic PVD coating with a thickness of about 2 microns to the surface of TA-2 titanium, which can greatly improve the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the phone and make the surface more beautiful.
